Cox Black and White Lab, Family History Day Exhibitor

It is a pleasure to introduce Cox Black and White Lab, Inc. as an exhibitor at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

Cox Black and White Lab, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Jeff Cox and Katherine Weedman-Cox of Kansas City, MO. In Kansas City, Jeff worked for a large photo lab and was known as one of the best printers in town. Katherine was a corporate and fine art photographer. Jeff used to print Katherine’s large photo murals for exhibition. This is how they met and developed their business relationship. The couple ventured west in 1989 to create a custom black and white photo lab in Sacramento.

Their first large job was duplicating 5, 211 glass plate negatives for the California State Library. The project was the gateway for Cox B&W Lab to work with thousands of California historical images. Since that glass negative project, Cox B&W Lab has become Northern California’s custom lab for fine art printing and film developing. They specialize in printing archival photos from wallets to murals, duplicating glass and nitrate negatives, copying and restoring old photos, developing traditional black and white film and printing color digital images.

Cox B&W Lab is the weekly vendor for the California State Library, California State Railroad Museum, Center for Sacramento History, California State Archives, Caltrans and Sacramento Public Library- Sacramento Room. Their customers are also throughout the U.S., calling for fine art printing and historical reproductions.

Jeff and Katherine never tire of listening to family history stories and looking at family pictures. They stress the importance of copying old photographs and keeping a written history.

SHIRLEY RIEMER - Family History Day Speaker

It is a pleasure to introduce Shirley Riemer who will be a speaker at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Shirley Riemer earned her Masters Degree in English from Carnegie-Mellon University. She taught high school English for ten years, then worked in communications for 22 years in Pennsylvania. Following her retirement, her book, The German Research Companion, was published in 1997, followed by a second edition in 2000, now sold out. For the third edition, which appeared in April 2010, she added two additional authors: Dr. Roger P. Minert and Jennifer A. Anderson. In 2001 she co-authored with Dr. Roger P. Minert the book Researching in Germany: A Handbook for Your Visit to the Homeland of Your Ancestors. For the last 18 years, she has published Der Blumenbaum, the award-winning quarterly journal of the Sacramento German Genealogy Society. For the last nine years she has also published the quarterly newsletter, Mitteilungen, for the Sacramento Turn Verein German-American Cultural Center – Library.

In response to her never-ending awe of the history and culture of our ancestors, she will have ventured out onto her 41st visit to Germany in August this year. As the editor of German-interest publications, Shirley has worked extensively with German family history researchers known nationally for their expertise in the field – in order to disseminate information helpful to descendants of German immigrants who are actively pursuing their German family history.

Shirley Riemer will present Getting Started In German Genealogy.
This session will focus on the first steps the German family historian must take to gain an understanding of the cultural, historical and genealogical facts essential to German ancestral research. The basics of the Second German Empire as they are relative to German research will be laid out so as to create an understanding of the basic organization of German and German-American records. A brief overview of German church and civil records, some peculiarities of such records, and several other basic research tools will be discussed.

El Dorado County Historical Society on TV

Have you been watching the TV show Who Do Think You Are? This program takes viewers along on a celebrity's journey to find his/her ancestors.

In the first episode, the El Dorado County Historical Society was one of several historical and genealogical societies and libraries that provided evidence of Sarah Jessica Parker's ancestors, specifically her fourth great-grandfather's 1850 death and location during the Gold Rush era. The Ancestry.com blog posted a summary of Ms. Parker's search including links to the 1850 U.S. Federal census for California and California Gold Rush counties.

The value of these organizations is immeasurable to family history researchers. Whether you are just beginning your journey or are more experienced, you will undoubtedly spend time pouring through the historical collections and speaking to the staff and volunteers at these research facilities.
