JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF SACRAMENTO, Exhibitor at Family History Day

It is a pleasure to introduce the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento (JGSS) as an exhibitor at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

The JGSS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the study of Jewish family history in order to learn about our rich heritage and to preserve it for future generations. The JGSS meets every month so that members can hear lectures by leading genealogy experts, access the JGSS’s outstanding library, and share their skills and personal experience. Meetings are held at the Albert Einstein Residence Center in Sacramento

At Family History Day at the California State Archives, the JGSS will have books available for name lookups from the “old country,” and we’ll have laptop computers to do free Ellis Island lookups if WiFi is available. We love to hear the oohs and ahhs when people make that first amazing contact with their ancestors. We’re delighted to be able to help you and point you in the right direction on your way to discovery.

Do come on by and see what you can find out about your past. We’ll also have an example or two of ancestor charts. Remember, you don’t have to be Jewish to like rye bread or bagels and you don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy Jewish genealogy. It’s a great deal of fun connecting with your past.

RON YOUNG, Speaker at Family History Day

It is a pleasure to introduce Ron Young as a speaker at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

Ron was first a Navy pilot and then a magnetic media engineer directing the manufacture of tape recording equipment, video tape and computer hard disks. Since retirement, his interests mainly focus on computer hardware and software and its application to genealogy. He has given presentations to local computer and genealogy societies on Google, Publishing Books on Lulu.com, Converting 35mm slides to Electronic Storage, Converting LP records to MP3 format and 10 Free Programs to Replace Microsoft and Adobe. He writes a series of columns on Computer Genealogy for the Nevada County Genealogical Society (NCGS) newsletter, Kith & Kin . Ron is the current President of the NCGS.

Ron Young will be presenting two classes:

10 Free non-Microsoft Programs: If you are loading a new computer with software or just haven’t wanted to pay the significant prices for the Microsoft Office Suite or the Adobe photo handling programs, Ron will introduce you to a set of programs to do the same job for a fraction of the price (FREE). These programs are Open Source so they may be used and distributed freely. Some are even available for both Mac and Windows Systems. A CD with the loading files and instructions for all the programs is available for $1.00.

Google - Searching in Depth: The simple appearance of the Google search window hides a browser capability of extreme power. Knowledge of how the search engine works and the few extra characters that can be added to modify the search function can routinely reduce millions of search results to the one or two you really want. We will go through these few commands and see how they function to get where you want to be. If required to read a search document, it can even translate to or from a foreign language.

Ron can be reached at ryoung9@pacbell.net

Glenda Gardner Lloyd will be presenting two classes:

Census records: Census records are the backbone of American genealogy. They place your family in a location every ten years from 1790 to 1930. Later census show family relatonships, year of immigration, naturalization and many many other clues to suggest further research.

Vital records: Birth, marriage and death records are the foundation for your genealogical records. These records may be at the state, county or town level; each level of jurisdiction should be searched. Some of these records are available online.

Sacramento Central Library, Family History Day Exhibitor

It is a pleasure to introduce the Sacramento Central Library as an exhibitor at Family History day at the California State Archives.

The Sacramento Central Library is happy to offer several free Genealogy programs and services to the public throughout the year. In addition, the various branches of the library system periodically offer genealogy programs. Central Library offers these services to the public:

• Ten lectures given by well-known genealogy specialists throughout northern California. Three series of lectures are offered during the year, during the months of January, May and September. Each series includes three lectures. A separate presentation on beginning genealogy is offered late in the month of February. The lectures are held on Sundays at Central Library, 1:30 – 3:00 pm, in the West Meeting Room.

• The Book a Genealogist program. Central Library is fortunate to have the assistance of a volunteer genealogist, who meets individually with people needing help with their research. The volunteer is available at the library on Tuesday afternoons. Registration is required for these half hour appointments, by calling 916-264-2920. Registrations can also be made in person at the library or by visiting the library’s website at http://www.saclibrary.org/.

• An extensive collection of non-circulating genealogy reference books and periodicals, available for use by the public during library open hours. The majority of these books belong to the Genealogical Association of Sacramento. The collection is located on the 4th floor of Central Library.

• Genealogy Book Bulletin, a monthly online genealogy newsletter. The genealogy book bulletin is available on the library’s website at www.saclibrary.org. Each newsletter contains information about local genealogy programs planned for that month, along with related books and websites. You can sign up to receive the monthly genealogy book bulletin in your e-mail account.

• The library subscribes to two genealogical databases for the public’s use: Ancestry Library Edition and New England Ancestors.org. Both of these databases can be used at any branch of the Sacramento Public Library system.

• Occasional genealogy computer classes, taught at Central Library by library staff. Currently, classes being taught include Introduction to Online Genealogy and Introduction to Ancestry Library Edition.

Beth Daugherty, Genealogy Coordinator at Central Library, will be available at the library's exhibit to answer your questions about these programs.
